The Liberal Soul

Robert Fowler said the Liberal Party is in danger of losing its soul, but that we are making an effort to get it back. An opportunity has presented itself. The Conservatives have created a crisis to justify a mean spirited reform of Canada’s pardon system. By removing a sense of forgiveness from our justice system, we will become a more mean spirited country.

Can the Liberal party help this country find its way through compassion to forgiveness? Can we defend, even if it’s unpopular, the idea that people deserve a second chance? If we don’t do these things, and instead sell out Liberal ideals for votes, I think we really will have lost our soul.

  1. Do you really believe that Graham James or Karla Homolka should be 'Forgiven'?!?!
    Given a second chance?!

This would be why people are leaving the Liberal party. You don't really have a soul. Yuck.

  3. You are making the mistake of black and white where there's many levels of grey here. Not all offenders continue to be a danger. I hope Canadians are smarter than you give them credit for when you present the worst cases as an argument for denying all offenders the opportunity at a pardon.

On the issues of Homolka and James. Yes, they should be. Hating and punishing them forever isn't going to make anyone's lives better. If they continue to be a risk to society then we have mechanisms, such as dangerous offenders, to deal with that.

  4. Groan. If boneheaded ideas like this are what can save our soul, sorry, but I'll sell it and take the votes.

  5. "Forgiveness" isn't the job of government. If a criminal lives for a certain time with out re-offending then a criminal record remission is the correct term for what the government can do. If the criminal wants forgiveness look to the victim. But please, let's fight an election on forgiving criminals, you can lump it in with worrying about Taliban killers and we'll argue for the victims and our soldiers. That would be a fun election.

  7. Criminal cases are prosecuted by the crown, not by individuals. It is therefore right that the crown forgive people for the crimes they commit.
